PERFORMANCE SCHEDULE

10:00 A.M. - Mariachi Estrella

Picture

Minnesota's Premier entertainment for

Latin / Regional Mexican / Spanish pop music.

11:00 A.M. - Union Shakedown

Picture
Just looking at this group of five shy boys from St. Paul, Minnesota, you might not guess that they know a thing about getting down and dirty. But watch them cut loose once, and you’ll see that they’ve got more going for them than just understated Midwestern charm. Started as an experimental college project more than half a decade ago, Union Shakedown recently teamed up with local engineering guru Chad Weis (Mason Jennings, Bad Plus) to record their debut, self-titled EP. The result is a raw, well-orchestrated mix of original rock and roll tunes. “We set out trying to create our own brand of Alt. Blues, and we came up with this,” says Mike Lloyd, slender front man whose gritty and soulful singing voice is completely unexpected.

12:00 - Erik Ritter - musician

1:00 - New Hope Hmong Dance Groupe

Picture
HOPE Community Academy, perched on the edge of the Hollow, will present a rarely seen form of Hmong dance, pure and not influenced by the cultures in which the Hmong have lived as they migrated across asia from Mongolia to Laos. These are true Hmong dances and each performance will include both.  They last only 3 and 5 minutes, so don't be late! They will perform DANCE OF THE FLYING BIRDS celebrating freedom   and LAO HOUA M PHAO DANCE symbolizing intercultural unity.

See description for 12:00.

David Schmid

I am a self taught dancer who was part of a break dance crew in Mexico. I love to dance. My work is high energy and usually a mix of interpretive dance and break dance.

2:00 P.M. - The May North Band – Bluegrass

Picture
Coming from the seeds they first planted with the trio George and the Generous Thieves, the members of the newly formed, folky-roots bluegrass group "The May North" bring a mixture of soft folk, twangy bluegrass, and sweet dual male and female harmonies. The group's influences include sounds such as Iron and Wine, Trampled By Turtles, Gillian Welch, David Rawlings, and the water hitting the shores of Lake Superior.

3:00 P.M. - Queen Niyahbingai/ Brown Sugar and her protège Zoe sharing the stage with Bridget Dawkins, from the group Sounds of Blackness.

Queen Niyahbingai/Brown Sugar

Picture
Queen Niyahbingai is a hip-hop artist born and raised on the Southside of Chicago now a new resident of Daytons Bluff. Her soulful manifestations are evocative of  Erykah Badu, Lauryn Hill, Queen Latiffah, and Jill Scott, with a rugged flow reminiscent of Little Kim, Eve, Rage, and Raw Diggah. Her lyrical content uses consciousness to reach listeners. Queen Niyahbingai is a unique hip-hop voice.  While showing us a natural beauty and modesty uncommon to the female artists packaged for mass marketing and sexploitation, she will surprise us with a grit that transcends her appearance.

4:00 P.M. - Hagstrom Brothers

The Hagstrom Brothers

Picture
A dynamic duo, The Hagstrom Brothers (Aaron and Andrew) perform music of the fifties and sixties, including songs of the Everly Brothers, The Beatles, Dion and the Belmonts, Elvis, and Ricky Nelson.  The brothers have played at a variety of venues, but this will be their first time performing at Swede Hollow.  As they are of Swedish descent, and proud of their heritage, they feel they will fit in well.  We delighted to have them perform at our GALA!

Aaron Hagstrom

To begin with, I am 75% Swedish and my great grandparents lived in Swede Hollow back in the day. This year, I graduated from Northwestern College with a B.A. in English. Singing in Men’s Chorus, I have cultivated my love of music, especially of the popular music of the fifties and sixties. Just last semester, I sang a “Love me Tender” choir solo. I will be studying at Wycliffe Hall, Oxford University next fall to study English and play rugby. After Oxford, I plan to enroll in Marine OCS and later take an M.A. in Middle Eastern Studies at Tel Aviv University.

Andrew Hagstrom

Andrew plays the acoustic guitar and sings harmony.  Last year, he graduated from Wheaton College (Illinois), where he was a tenor in the Men’s Glee Club. He will be starting graduate school in the fall; but, in the meantime, he looks forward to making music.
